His Calgary-based company Laricina Energy Ltd. may not have produced a drop of oil as of May (its projects are in pilot and commercial development stages), but president and CEO Glen Schmidt has been preoccupied with another venture. Schmidt is the chairman of the In Situ Oil Sands Alliance (IOSA), a united front of up-and-coming oil sands developers.

Friday on the Rutherford Show: A former Alberta Cabinet minister takes on the oil sands PR problem - July 5, 2010

Pat Nelson joined Rutherford on AM770 to discuss the PR problem currently surrounding the oil sands.

The interview highlights how in situ technology differs from mining, noting key differences like no tailing ponds, smaller well pads, and less emissions.  It addresses how forward thinking technology is the future of the oil sands to provide a safe, secure oil supply in a more environmentally friendly way, and addresses the barriers the industry faces moving forward.

In his book Why We Hate the Oil Companies, John Hofmeister, the former president of Shell Oil, describes the lamentable inability of the industry to get its message out to a public that believes it is nasty, rich and dirty.

"The industry has a real serious problem. The industry lives in public relations solitude. It does very little to engage the consuming public or the voting public or really anybody except who they think is a key stakeholder in what they're doing. As a result, very few people know what the industry actually does," Hofmeister recently told an interviewer.
