In situ oil sands group seeks alternative name - June 4, 2010

The In Situ Oil Sands Alliance is looking for a new name to peg on non-mined bitumen, saying a clear distinction needs to be made between the two major types of oilsands production.

The key is finding a moniker that's catchy and easy to understand, unlike in situ, steam-assisted gravity drainage, THAI or LASAR, said group chairman Glen Schmidt.

Premier Ed Stelmach’s effort to polish the image of the oilsands among those U.S. politicians critical of mining operations is receiving praise from former Alberta premier Peter Lougheed.
