IOSA is the voice of an alliance of in situ producers seeking innovative answers to the most compelling issue of our time.

Challenging Conventional Thinking

Our goal is to enrich our stakeholders with fresh and balanced perspectives on the Canadian oil sands, energy trade and supply, and the responsible development of hydrocarbons.

Our Identity

We are independent in situ developers located in Western Canada whose main business is the oil sands, including technologies that may have a major impact on in situ oil sands extraction. Our interest is in creating balanced conversations about global energy supply, and about Canada's oil sands in particular.  We aim to provide accurate, consistent, fair and reasoned information, recognizing that we represent a single voice in a complex, multi-faceted dialogue.

Our Economics

Combined, IOSA members have estimated capital expenditures in excess of $2.5 billion on our projects to date and we are anticipating investing a further $7 billion over the next five years to develop our resource base. We build our in situ processing equipment in fabrication shops across North America.

Premier Ed Stelmach’s effort to polish the image of the oilsands among those U.S. politicians critical of mining operations is receiving praise from former Alberta premier Peter Lougheed.

Glen Schmidt was named one of Alberta's 50 Most Influential People by Alberta Venture Magazine.

Pat Nelson joined Rutherford on AM770 to discuss the PR problem currently surrounding the oil sands.

John Hofmeister, the former president of Shell Oil, describes in his book the lamentable inability of the industry to get its message out to a public. Pat Nelson, vice chair of IOSA, agrees.
